The Economics of Religion
Notes from Dr. Chuck Zech on the Economics of Religion:
- Catholics in the USA, on average, give 1% of their salary to the church, while Protestants, on average, give 2% of their salary
- The total revenue of the US Catholic Church per year is US$7.5 Billion. Revenue fell after the church abuse scandal, and it is now rising slower than inflation. In real terms, revenue is falling because of the scandal
- Catholics are still giving less to their churches on account of the church abuse scandal, 5 years later.
- The Catholic Church is not about to democratize in terms of doctrine, but young members are demanding input into the finances of the church. This is a way of back-door democratization.
